Benefits of Tinting
UVA/UVB Protection
Window tinting offers powerful protection against harmful ultraviolet (UVA/UVB) rays, blocking up to 99% of UV radiation. This shields your vehicle's interior from sun damage, preventing fading, cracking, and deterioration of upholstery, dashboards, and other surfaces. It also safeguards occupants by reducing the risk of skin damage and long-term exposure-related conditions like skin cancer.

Types of Tint
When it comes to window tinting, there are several options to choose from, each with unique features, benefits, and drawbacks. Below are six common types of window tint you’re likely to encounter. Click each type to learn more.
Ceramic Tint
[Our Preferred Tint] Ceramic tint is a premium option that uses nano-ceramic particles to deliver outstanding performance. It offers superior heat rejection (up to 85%-98%), blocks 99% of harmful UV rays, and provides excellent clarity without interfering with electronic signals like GPS or cell phones. Additionally, ceramic tint is highly durable and resistant to fading or scratches.
Benefits
Exceptional heat rejection and UV protection
No signal interference
Long-lasting durability
Clear visibility and reduced glare
Drawbacks
Higher cost compared to other types
Limited color options

Shades of Tint
Window tint shades are measured by Visible Light Transmission (VLT), which represents the percentage of light that passes through the film into the vehicle’s interior. A lower VLT percentage means a darker tint and less light penetration, while a higher VLT percentage results in a lighter tint with more light transmission.

Understanding VLT Percentages
5% VLT: Commonly referred to as "limo tint," this is an extremely dark shade that allows only 5% of visible light to pass through. It provides maximum privacy, glare reduction, and sun protection but significantly reduces visibility from inside the vehicle, especially at night.
20% VLT: A popular choice for those seeking a balance between privacy and visibility. It offers good heat rejection and UV protection while maintaining moderate visibility.
35% VLT: A medium tint that allows more light in but still reduces glare and heat effectively. This is often chosen for a clean, stylish look without overly darkening the windows.
50% VLT: A lighter shade that allows 50% of visible light to pass through. While it doesn’t provide as much privacy, it still reduces heat and UV rays while maintaining excellent visibility.
70% VLT: Nearly clear, this shade is ideal for those who prioritize UV protection and heat rejection without altering the appearance of their windows significantly.
VLT vs. VLR
It’s important not to confuse Visible Light Transmission (VLT) with Visible Light Reflection (VLR):
VLT measures how much light passes through the window film into the vehicle.
VLR indicates how much light is reflected off the surface of the tinted window (i.e., bounced back outward). Higher VLR films may have a mirrored or reflective appearance.

Warranties
You should always review the manufacturer's warranty for specific terms, exclusions and length of coverage. Many automotive window tint manufacturers offer limited-lifetime warranties against fading, delamination, bubbling and cracking. Anything less may be a potential warning sign of a lesser-quality product.
Aside from the manufacturer's warranty, you should also pay close attention to the installer's workmanship warranty. Of course, your installer should always offer to repair any defect resulting from an error on their behalf (at least for a specified period of time). However, you should also pay attention to any clauses pertaining to the repair/replacement of tint resulting from an issue with the film itself. In other words, if your film chips and replacement film is covered by the manufacturer's warranty, will the original installer charge you labor to conduct the replacement? Is this type of coverage offered for free or for an additional fee? If so, for how long is the coverage?
Comparing warranties should help you quickly narrow down the list of both the brands/types of tint and the installers.
Legality
DISCLAIMER: This section is for informational purposes only and should not be considered legal advice. Always consult your state or local authorities for the most accurate and up-to-date tint regulations.
Different regions have specific regulations regarding allowable window tint darkness for vehicles. These laws often vary based on window location (e.g., front windshield, side windows, rear windows) and vehicle type (e.g., passenger car vs. SUV). For example:
Front side windows are often required to have a higher VLT to ensure driver visibility.
Rear windows often allow darker tints (e.g., 5%-20%)
To avoid fines or failed inspections, always check your jurisdiction’s tint laws before selecting a shade.
Checking Your Local Laws
For a comprehensive overview of tint laws in your area or other states, visit resources like tinting-laws.com or consult your local DMV. Always confirm with state or local authorities, as regulations and enforcement can change.

Overview of Texas Tint Laws
The following standards apply to privately owned sedans, SUV's & vans. Commercial and for-hire vehicles may be subject to different standards.
Front Side Windows: Tint must have at least a 25% Visual Light Transmission (VLT)
Back Side Windows: No minimum VLT
Windshield: 25% VLT tint permitted above the manufacturer’s AS-1 line (or top 5 inches), with less than 25% reflection
Rear Window: No minimum VLT (if vehicle possess side mirrors with at least 200 feet of view to rear)
Medical Exceptions (restrictions apply - see TxDOT for details): Front side windows may be tinted below 25% VLT with a signed medical exemption statement from a licensed physician or optometrist
Tips & F.A.Q.
The following tips and answers are general guidelines. Always follow your installer’s and manufacturer’s instructions for the best results and to maintain your warranty.
How long does window tinting last?
The lifespan of window tint depends on the quality of the film, installation, and environmental conditions. Standard tints typically last up to five years, while high-quality films—especially those made from ceramic, metal, or advanced polyester—can last ten years or more with proper care. Regular maintenance and using recommended cleaning products will help maximize the life of your tint.
