What Is PPF?

Paint Protection Film (PPF), also known as a "clear bra," is a transparent, durable thermoplastic urethane film applied to a vehicle’s painted surfaces to protect against chips, scratches, road debris, bug splatter, and minor abrasions. Modern PPF is nearly invisible, though colored and patterned options are now available, and is engineered to conform seamlessly to the curves and contours of your vehicle

PPF vs Vinyl

While PPF was once only available in clear-gloss or matte finishes, it now comes in a variety of colors and patterns, offering both protection and customization. However, this does not mean that PPF and vinyl wraps are the same. PPF is made from durable, self-healing urethane designed to protect your vehicle’s paint from chips, scratches, and road debris, and can last 5–10 years or more. In contrast, vinyl wraps are made from thinner, less durable materials and are primarily used for aesthetic changes, such as altering color or adding graphics. Vinyl wraps typically last 2–5 years and do not provide the same level of protection as PPF.

Benefits of PPF

Paint Protection & Impact Resistance

PPF acts as a nearly invisible shield, protecting your vehicle’s paint from rock chips, road debris, insects, bird droppings, tree sap, and minor abrasions. Its advanced thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) construction is engineered to absorb and disperse the energy from impacts, significantly reducing the risk of stone chips and small dents caused by gravel or flying debris. This helps maintain your car’s pristine finish and reduces the need for costly paint repairs. PPF also filters harmful UV rays, preventing paint fading and oxidation.

Warranties

When considering Paint Protection Film (PPF), always review both the manufacturer’s warranty and installer’s warranty for specific terms, exclusions, and coverage length. High-quality PPF usually comes with a 7–10 year manufacturer’s warranty, which is a good indicator of product quality. Anything less may signal a lower-grade film.

Typically Covered by Manufacturer’s Warranty

Typically Not Covered by Manufacturer’s Warranty

Bubbling, yellowing, or cracking of the film

Damage from accidents or collisions

Peeling or loss of adhesion

Damage from intentional acts or extreme use (e.g. off-roading or mudding)

Chips or scratches on the film itself

Dents or damage to the underlying vehicle body

In addition to the manufacturer’s warranty, pay close attention to the installer’s workmanship warranty, which should cover any defects related to installation for a specified period. You should also consider whether labor for warranty repairs is included, or if additional fees apply if the film needs to be replaced under the manufacturer’s warranty. Choosing an authorized installer may also be a deciding factor, as many film manufacturers require professional installation by certified technicians for the warranty to remain valid.

Carefully comparing both the coverage and terms of manufacturer and installer warranties will help you quickly narrow down your options.

Tips & F.A.Q.

The following tips and answers are general guidelines. Always follow your installer’s and manufacturer’s instructions for the best results and to maintain your warranty.

Before Installation...

  • Clean the exterior: Your vehicle’s exterior must be clean before PPF installation. While your installer will prep the surface, it’s best to wash your car beforehand to remove major debris, mud, and dirt.

  • No wax or coatings: Do not apply waxes, sealants, or protective coatings prior to your appointment, as these can prevent proper film adhesion.
